Shortly after this, the Devas appeared before Him and reminded Him of His promise to redeem them from their present slavery to the Asuras. In order to help them as desired, He assumed His original form with six faces. From each of these faces a Divine spark shot forth. The resplendence of these Divine sparks only tended to increase the sufferings and confusion of the Devas. But the Lord ordered Vayu (wind-god) and Agni (fire-god) to carry these six sparks and leave them in the sacred Ganga, who was to take them to a tank known by the name of Saravanappoihai. Vayu and Agni obeyed at once. By the grace of the Lord, the sparks were carried by holy Ganga to Saravanappoihai. On arriving at the tank, the sparks assumed the form of six children of unparalleled beauty. Each baby was lying on a lotus and was being lulled to sleep by the Devis of the Karttikai (the 3rd constellation of the 27 Stars). To witness this Avatara of the Saviour, all the Devas hastened to the tank along with Lord Siva and Parvati. Parvati, out of the extreme fondness of a mother, took up the babes together and called them Skanda. Instead of they remaining as six separate individual babes, there arose the form of one Deity with six faces and twelve hands. Hence he was known as Lord Shanmukha, the Lord with six faces. As he was nursed by the six Devis of the Karttikai Star, he was known also as Karttik Swami, or Karttikeyan. Thus, to the great joy of the persecuted Devas, the Lord Himself appeared in the form of Shanmukha to protect the good and to punish the wicked. As the form of Lord Shanmukha originated in a tank of shrubs, he was known as Saravanabhava. Along with Him there appeared nine other divine heroes, the eldest of them being Veerabahu by name. These nine brother heroes were to assist Lord Skanda in His war with the Asuras.
Years passed while this immense registration of human thought was still inprogress. The founders of the settlement grew feebler while the eldest of thenext generation were still adolescent. Of the two women, one had died and theother was almost a cripple, both martyrs to the task of motherhood. A youth, aninfant boy, and four girls of various ages--on these the future of man nowdepended. Unfortunately these precious beings had suffered from their verypreciousness. Their education had been bungled. They had been both pampered andoppressed. Nothing was thought too good for them, but they were overwhelmedwith cherishing and teaching. Thus they came to hold the elders at arm'slength, and to weary of the ideals imposed on them. Brought into a ruined worldwithout their own consent, they refused to accept the crushing obligationtoward an improbable future. Hunting, and the daily struggle of a pioneeringage, afforded their spirits full exercise in courage, mutual loyalty, andinterest in one another's personality. They would live for the present only, and for the tangible reality, not for a culture which they knew only byhearsay. In particular, they loathed the hardship of engraving endless verbiageupon granitic slabs.
Sacred Mother Tongue The Ruin Of Man Rar
But ever afterwards the Martians suffered from the psychological effects oftheir victory at the close of the epoch of racial wars. The extreme brutalitywith which the other races had been exterminated conflicted with the generousimpulses which civilization had begun to foster, and left a scar upon theconscience of the victors. In self-defence they persuaded themselves that sincethey were so much more admirable than the rest, the extermination was actuallya sacred duty. And their unique value, they said, consisted in their uniqueradiational development. Hence arose a gravely insincere tradition and culture, which finally ruined the species. They had long believed that the physicalbasis of consciousness must necessarily be a system of units directly sensitiveto ethereal vibrations, and that organisms dependent on the physical contact oftheir parts were too gross to have any experience whatever. After the age ofthe racial massacres they sought to persuade themselves that the excellence, orethical worth, of any organism depended upon the degree of complexity and unityof its radiation. Century by century they strengthened their faith in thisvulgar doctrine, and developed also a system of quite irrational delusions andobsessions based upon an obsessive and passionate lust in radiation.
THE CREATION OF THE WORLD.HE CAUSED THE PHENOMENAL UNIVERSE TO APPEAR.(This seems to the translator to read more like a work of UmApathi, than of our sage!)Lines 1-10 The Feet of CivanWhile the Four-faced and other heavenly dwellers rose,Adoring, sacred MAl, whose head with rays is crowned,With His two feet measured the threefold world,-While saints from the four quarters praised with all their sentient powers,Eager that day Thy foot and crown to know, (5)He then became a fierce strong boar, and rushing onDug down through sevenfold regions, wearied cried at last:Eternal Source of all, to Thee be triumphs manifold !'Yet though He worship paid, Thy pair of Feet-flowers saw he not;Yet Thou to me Thy worshipper art easy of access ! (10)Lines 11 - 35 Human embodimentOn earth girt by the watery seas, from elephant to ant,Through many matrices I passed,Obtained a human form within my mother's womb...Thus was I born into the sad sea of th' afflictive life. (25)Then during each year as it met meI gained and hoarded gains. How varied was my life!.Morning's routine, hunger in noontide hour, and nightFor sleep. In journeys oft I lived.Jet black locks, and crimson lips, and radiant smiles were hers; (30)Into love's sea I plunged... (31-35)In the wide marts where foolish worldlings toilI lived, still slave to fierce desires.I lived by sea of learning multiform;I lived in sorrow men call wealth;I lived 'mid ancient stings of poverty, (40)And thus in varied forms and fortunes spent my days.Lines 42-51 The idea of God comes into his lifeThen wondrous thought of the Divine, so-called, arose.Soon as I knew that BEING, free from hate, unique,Delusive powers in ever-changing millionsBegan beguiling varied play. (45)Relations, neighbours, came around,With fluent tongue they urged their 'atheism'Friends around (such herds of cattle old !)-Seiz'd me, call'd, hurried to and fro;The BrAhman said 'the way of penance is supreme'; (50)And others showed the law of trusting love !Sectarian disputants complacentlyDiscordant tenets shouted loud and fought. Then haughty VedAnt creed unreal came, Whirled, dashed, and roared like furious hurricane. (55)LOkAyathan a glistening mighty snakeBrought cruel poisoned heresies.Whilst these delusions, endless, girt me round,Lines 59 - 86 His conversionLest I should go astray, He laid His hand on me !As wax before the unwearied fire (60)With melting soul I worshipt, wept, and bent myself,Danced, cried aloud, and sang, and prayed. They say: 'The tooth of elephant and woman's grasp relax not,'So I with love, real, interrnitting never,Was pierced, as wedge driven into soft young tree. (65)All tears, I like the refluent sea was tossed;Soul was subdued, and body quivered with delight. While the world called me demon, mocking me,False shame I threw aside; the folk's abusive wordI took as ornament; nor did I swerve. (70)My mind was rapt;-a fool, but in my folly wise,-The goal I sought to reach infinity ! All wondering desire,As cow yearns for its calf, I moaning, hurried to and fro.Not ev'n in dreams thought I of other gods. The One most precious Infinite to earth came down; (75)Nor did I greatness of the Sage superne contemn,Who came in grace. Thus from the pair of sacred feetLike shadow from its substance parting not,Before, behind, at every point, to it I clung. My inmost self in strong desire dissolved, I yearned; (80)Love's river overflowed its banks; My senses all in Him were centredl; 'Lord !' I cried. With stammering speech, and quivering frameI clasped adoring hands; my heart expanding like a flower.Eyes gleamed with joy and tears distilled.
